Healthy-living advice from the Director of Mindful Movement at THE WELL

Q:

What does wellness mean to you?

A:

Feeling light, receptive, and clear in my eyes, my body, my thoughts, my work, my movements and my relationships.

Q:

The book you own that is the most dog-eared?

A:

The dictionary

Q:

Favorite beauty ritual?

A:

I recently started using a muslin facial cleansing cloth, and I’m obsessed! My skin feels so clean and balanced — and I’m finding that I can often just use this cloth and water to wash my face.

Q:

Food philosophy?

A:

I am a big fan of Dan Barber’s work that dives into why organic food is not only better for the planet, but also tastes better. And Michael Pollan’s theory: Eat [organic] food, mostly plants, not too much. I also follow Alisa Vitti’s nutritional recommendations for cycle-syncing, and doing so has helped to manage my endometriosis. I highly recommend all women look into her work.

Q:

Most used condiment?

A:

Nutritional yeast, which has a cheesy flavor but is dairy-free.

Q:

Go-to wellness gift?

A:

An AllSwell Journal. My friend Laura Rubin is the founder. I love supporting her incredible business and turning more friends onto the power of journaling.

Q:

Words to live by?

A:

Pause. Breathe. Consider. Decide.

Q:

Weirdest wellness trend you’ve tried?

A:

Twenty years ago a lot of people thought I was weird for doing yoga... then acupuncture... then becoming a vegan. But these all seem mainstream now, so maybe exfoliating my scalp!

Q:

What are your wellness travel essentials?

A:

I am usually traveling with my kids, so I make sure I have notepads, markers and books on hand to keep the peace. I also tote a little spray bottle with water and a few drops of essential oil to spritz and refresh.

Q:

The key to a good night’s sleep?

A:

I’ve always struggled with sleep, and I’ve finally found this miraculous little formula: I drink a cup of chamomile tea, I meditate and then I read before bed. I will also keep the tea next to my bed so if I’m woken up in the middle of the night, I’ll get up to meditate and have a few more sips.

Q:

Hydration strategy?

A:

I alternate drinking water and tea all day long.

Q:

Inner issue you’re still working on?

A:

Not taking everything personally

Q:

Preferred mode of movement?

A:

THE WELL’s signature class Complete, which is a combo of strength training and yoga.
